Countdown to the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympics
From 26th July to 11th August next year, the 2024 Summer Olympics will be taking place in Paris, France.
Given that 9.7 million spectators, 31,500 volunteers, 10,500 athletes and 6,000 reporters will be descending on the French capital and its surroundings, the impact on global mobility will be significant. Two and a half weeks after the Olympics has drawn to a close, the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games will begin, running from 28th August to 8th September 2024. This event will also have a significant impact on global mobility.
What global mobility challenges should you expect in and around Paris ahead of, during and directly after both the Olympics and the Paralympic Games?
- Visas and Permits – Expect delays in visa processing times and residence permit renewals.
- Temporary Accommodation – Expect severe shortages of hotel rooms, serviced apartments and short-term rentals. In addition, expect price spikes of 30% – 70%, and cancellation policies to be fixed and non-refundable.
- Long-Term Housing – Expect many homeowners to reserve their properties for short-term rental, enabling them to take advantage of the higher rental fees which they can charge because of the increased demand that the Games will generate. This will result in a shortage of long-term rentals.
- Household Goods – Expect packing and delivery to be more challenging than usual: it will be hampered by customs clearance delays, access difficulties (buildings and roads), extremely heavy traffic and additional security checks.
- Travel and Transportation – Expect road traffic to be extremely heavy, public transport to be extremely busy, and rental cars to be a) difficult to come by, and b) expensive to hire.

Whilst we appreciate that in some cases it may be unavoidable, we would strongly recommend against having assignees and their families moving to Paris and its surroundings during the summer of 2024.
