Tomorrow (March 8th) is International Women’s Day. A global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women, the theme of this year’s International Women’s Day is Accelerate Action. This theme is a collective call for increased momentum and urgency in addressing gender inequality and invites governments, workplaces, and individuals to take action.

K2 is committed to fostering an environment where its employees are empowered to drive innovation and lead transformative change, regardless of location, seniority, gender or any other defining characteristic.

Inspired by the Accelerate Action theme, we wanted to take this opportunity to showcase some of the women of K2, from across all levels of the business, who are key to accelerating our mission of providing seamless global mobility solutions and meeting our Kinetic strategy goals.

At the end of 2024, 66% of K2’s global employee population were women, so it stands to reason that women, from all offices and across all levels of the business, can often be found at the forefront of the company, shaping our growth and success.

Today, we reflect on how their unwavering commitment continues to inspire progress and propel us toward a more inclusive, diverse, and action-oriented future.

K2’s Group Managing Director, Jo Wakeham, has been instrumental in the success of K2 over the last 5 years. A member of the K2 Board, she always leads from the front; driving strategy, delivering projects and managing a sizeable and diverse team of people across multiple regions.

We asked Shelley what the theme of ‘Accelerating Action’ means to her:

“Agility and willingness to embrace change. Acting on promises and not doing something because ‘that’s how it’s always been done’.

K2 doesn’t stand still: as an organisation we are constantly evolving and evaluating our processes, looking for ways to improve efficiencies and experiences for all our stakeholders.

This commitment to continuous improvement is key to accelerating action and keeping things moving in the right direction.”

On the key actions that employers can take to support women to achieve their potential and make an impact in the workplace, Shelley adds:

“Fostering an inclusive culture where all employees feel valued and respected is essential. Employees should be made to feel like they have a voice and can effect change, that what they’re doing makes a difference in some way.

At K2 we have teams who are dedicated to delivering our People & Culture strategy and making sure that K2 remains a Great Place To Work®, not for some, but for all.

Through introducing initiatives that support flexible working and promote work-life balance, K2 has created a workplace where women are not only supported to succeed but empowered to thrive.”

“Relocating from Ukraine to the UK was one of the biggest transitions in my life. It taught me how to stay focused under pressure, make decisions quickly, and trust my ability to handle complex situations. These lessons directly translate into my work, where I need to assess challenges, communicate effectively, and support assignees. My personal experience has given me the confidence to take the initiative and approach challenges with a problem-solving mindset.”

Asked if there was one thing in her professional journey that has helped her to succeed so far, Iryna responded:

“I believe that the ability to stay adaptable and open to new learning opportunities has been a major driver of my professional growth. Ana shared her views on the importance of organisations encouraging their employees to give back:

“I think it’s really important for organisations to encourage employees to give back. It not only makes employees feel good and more engaged, but it also helps build a positive, supportive work culture.

When we are involved in causes our colleagues care about, it boosts morale and can make them feel more connected to the company. Also, companies that focus on giving back tend to attract people who value those same things, which is great for recruitment and retention. It’s a win for the company, the employees, and the community.”

Asked about the proudest moment of her career at K2, Ana said:

“Without a doubt, being one of the people leading on the project which saw us building a school in Brazil through the K2 Foundation was a huge milestone for me, and having the trust of my Director made all the difference in decision-making and the results we achieved.”

“Being involved in K2’s Sustainability Champion initiative is a rewarding experience and plays many roles in personal development and growth. The initiative provides personal fulfilment, empowering members of the team to positively impact the environment and create a better world for all.

Stronger leadership skills are developed by way of inspiring, motivating and empowering others towards more sustainable practices. Communication and problem-solving skills are also improved, and it pushes one to think more critically about innovative solutions.

Of course, the Sustainability Champion initiative also plays a big role in feeling more confident about driving strategy and making sustainable choices in daily life.”

The advice she would offer to her younger self, starting her career?

“Be your future-self’s best friend, you’ll thank yourself later. Every experience, whether positive or negative, is an opportunity for growth. Never stop learning and growing: the day you think you know it all, is the day you are old.

Be your best most authentic self, be the owner of your reality, make a positive difference everywhere you go, and stay true to your values, regardless of the world around you.”

Shahida Hamid, Relocation Manager

Shahida Hamid is a Relocation Manager in K2’s Singapore office. Alongside this role, she is one of the Charity Champions for her region.

Shahida explains that her mother has been the most significant female role model in her life:

“My mom has always been my role model. Her presence has developed me into what I am today. Ever since I was young, she has never failed to show me her strength in facing difficulties throughout our childhood. She cooked, cleaned, worked, and took care of us – 4 siblings while my dad was away working as ship engineer. We all grew up well and appreciate what has been instilled in us.

Values that I learned and use to this day:

Respect – Respect ourselves and others.
Share and Give – Share our treasures and delicious food with others.
Endurance – Never give up when things are difficult. There will be a solution somewhere.

I have shared these values with the next generation by teaching them to my children.”

What made Shahida want to become a Charity Champion?

“I joined the Charity Champions programme during my first year in K2. Being able to gather and share donations with those who need support has given me an enormous sense of fulfilment and peace.

I am proud that K2 offers this initiative as part of our culture, and of the impact that we can have on our local community.”

Karen Ee, Relocation Manager

Karen, who works alongside Shahida in K2 Singapore as both Relocation Manager and Charity Champion, offered her thoughts on the simple steps that can be taken by everyone to get us closer to gender equality:

“I think it’s important to remember that small, consistent actions can lead to big changes.

Education plays a crucial role; we should encourage schools and workplaces to deliver education programmes that teach the value of respect, equality and fairness. We can show support by mentoring women and supporting their personal development. Using inclusive, neutral language is another simple but powerful way to promote gender equality.”

Sharing how she achieves work-life balance, Karen says:

“Besides defining work hours, prioritizing key tasks and implementing other strategies to navigate equilibrium, for me practising self-care, is also important. I will make time to work out at the gym with my gym buddies (two of my colleagues) or at home with an exercise mat. My motto is ‘doing something is better than nothing’, be it five minutes or an hour-long workout. It helps to reduce stress, boost overall health and helps me to think clearly. Sometimes during my workout, I find a solution to challenging cases or even solve my daughter’s math question!

Watching interior design on YouTube or going for long walks with my three dogs or listening to the ‘Spirited Away’ soundtrack with a glass of wine helps me to unwind and go to a chill level. And not forgetting sharing experiences with colleagues can provide insights and mutual support.”

An advocate for collaborative working, Helen is valued for the way in which she always ensures that members of any project teams she’s involved with are given the opportunity to shine, creating an environment where individuals can grow and reach their full potential.

Isabelle Badamallet, Senior Relocation Manager

Isabelle Badamallet is based in Paris, and is an integral part of K2 France’s small but dynamic team. Having joined K2 in 2022, Isabelle has recently progressed to the role of Senior Relocation Manager. Her wealth of industry experience sees her also offering immigration support, alongside relocation management.

We asked Isabelle to share her thoughts on some of the ways to empower female colleagues at work:

“In the relocation and global mobility industry, fostering a supportive and inclusive work environment is key to empowering female colleagues.

One of the most effective ways to do this is through mentorship and sponsorship, actively guiding women in their career development and advocating for their advancement.

At K2, where adaptability and problem-solving are critical, it’s important to ensure that women also have access to leadership opportunities and professional development programmes.

Encouraging open conversations about career aspirations, providing flexibility for work-life balance and recognising achievements help to create an environment where women feel valued and motivated to excel.”

On the question of ‘what makes a good leader?’, Isabelle responded:

“A good leader, especially in the relocation industry, must be adaptable, empathetic and solution-oriented.

Leading global mobility projects requires a deep understanding of different cultures, effective communication, and the ability to remain calm under pressure.

I believe strong leadership is about inspiring and empowering teams, fostering collaboration, and leading with integrity.

A great leader also prioritises professional development – both for themselves and their team – by continually learning and encouraging others to grow.

At K2, leadership is about building trust, making informed decisions, and ensuring that both clients and assignees feel supported throughout the relocation process.”
