March 8th will see people around the world celebrating International Women’s Day (IWD).

This day will bring together the thoughts and feelings of everyone concerned with women’s rights. On this day, issues that are often disregarded or ignored will be discussed openly. At the forefront of discussions will be topics such as gender equality and violence against women.

IWD History

International Women’s Day grew out of the female suffrage movement that arose in New Zealand in the 20th century, fired up by worker’s rights activists spread throughout Europe and North America. The very first Women’s Day took place in New York City on the 28th of February, 1909.

In the 21st century, IWD is observed in a multitude of ways with the date being a public holiday in some calendars. Celebrations take place to promote the achievements of women. Issues that still affect the female population today are broadcast throughout the media. Campaigns are run and where passions run strong, protests take place.

The IWD mission

The mission of IWD has never changed. Celebrations, protests and campaigns have one thing in common and that is raising awareness of issues that compromise the equality of women. Simultaneously, women’s achievements are applauded and showcased to the world.

The theme of International Women’s Day 2023 is ‘Embrace Equity’. It calls for gender equity to be recognised as the status quo throughout society. Equity goes beyond equality: this year’s campaign aims to drive home the fact that equal opportunities are no longer enough.

If we look at the two concepts, equality refers to women being given the same opportunities. Equity recognises the fact that all women have a range of different circumstances, hence opportunities should be weighted so that they result in an equal outcome.

IWD and K2’s Culture and Ethos

Many of the principles of IWD align with those of K2. The company’s focus is on attracting, developing and holding onto people, with no differentiation between the sexes. Employees who display exceptional abilities are rewarded and praised, with outstanding skills and experience being fully appreciated.

We are a people-driven business which employs people who fulfil our needs, no matter their gender. Working as a team, we support each other, celebrating the highs and providing help and support when needed during challenging times.

As part of our corporate social responsibility strategy, we have created an array of ways for employees and their families to feel supported. We provide a stimulating, open and inclusive working culture. Women with young families know that they can work flexibly. Employee remuneration is fair across the board with no gender differentiation. With an equal opportunities policy that provides great terms and conditions for our staff, women who work for K2 feel appreciated, supported and respected.

International Women’s Day may take place on the 8th of March, but the principles that sit at its heart form an integral part of K2’s culture, which enriches the K2 family each and every day of the year.
