A Summary of Day 13 of K2’s volunteering project in Nepal from worker Emma Kerslake
The final day of work awaited for our volunteers as we made our way up the steep steps for the final time to finish the classroom flooring, with one quick pit stop for Jewels to give two local children a few new clothes.
Once the foam base had been cut and laid and the carpets rolled out on top, the rooms were finally complete. What a huge change they were from the cold and bare rooms which saw children sitting on concrete floors to eat lunch.
Although we made great progress during our time at the school, the building is still partly under construction after the original three-storey building was destroyed during the 2015 earthquake which brought devastation to Nepal.
Once the work was complete, a short farewell and thank you ceremony commenced and our volunteers were once again handed flower garlands and certificates as a token of gratitude.
In the afternoon the team split in two, with most taking a bumpy jeep ride up to the mountainous village of Ghandruk, and Emma, Taynara and Adelaide opting to hike, led by project manager Suraj.
During the first hour of the hike, local schoolchildren on their way home joined our trekkers and held their hands to help lead them up the steep path – it was one of the most heartwarming moments we’ve had to date.
For both teams, wonderful views of the Annapurna mountain range awaited them as they arrived at the Old Village Inn in Ghandruk – views which made the tough climb and the drop to 4 degrees worth it!

A summary of Day 13 of K2’s Everest Base Camp Trek from walker Natasha Wannenburg
Today we set off on our second descend trek, and were blessed with such amazing scenery as we trekked through the snow from the previous night.
With every corner we walked around, we were stunned by new views.
Today we also had to face the biggest downhills we had with our ascent, so despite having a descend day, we also had big climbs.
As we came closer to Namche Bazaar where we were spending our evening, the clouds closed down on us and we were walking alongside the clouds.
We saw some beautiful wildlife, such as mountain goats, eagles and many more.
Upon arrival at Namche, most of the team made sure to catch a warm shower and also visited the hair salon… once again… whilst some of the other members went to the Irish pub for a few celebratory drinks.

The charitable initiatives that the Foundation funds focus on helping the children within those communities, children whose futures are bleak or uncertain. Often, the support provided takes the form of education, as this gives children the chance to develop skillsets which can increase the number of opportunities available to them as they grow up.
