In our latest webinar, hosted by Mariana Montenegro our local Immigration Consultant, we explored the dynamic landscape of immigration in Latin America, with a special emphasis on Mexico. We were fortunate to have Fernando Ramírez Santín, Regional Immigration Services Operation Manager at PremierDS, share his expertise on the current trends and challenges shaping the region.

Key Insights from the Session
Fernando provided a comprehensive overview of the significant shifts occurring under Mexico’s new presidential administration, led by Claudia Sheinbaum since October 2024. A notable change is the increased scrutiny of family member services and family unity processes, a response to past non-compliance issues. This has resulted in longer resolution times and additional requirements for family applications, including mandatory immigration hearings to validate relationships.
The discussion also highlighted the implications of the new U.S. administration under President Trump, which has halted new family unity applications. This policy shift has created complications for foreign nationals traveling through Mexico, placing additional pressure on Mexican immigration authorities to manage individuals without legal status.

Challenges and Solutions
Fernando addressed the regional disparities within Mexico’s immigration system, pointing out that requirements can vary significantly from one office to another. This inconsistency presents challenges for both companies and expatriates. Furthermore, he emphasized the increased processing times and potential new requirements for hiring foreign nationals, particularly those from restricted nationalities, as key concerns for businesses operating in the region.
The session also focused on the digital transformation of Mexico’s immigration procedures. While there have been improvements in filing processes, challenges persist in ensuring clarity regarding uploaded documents. The transition to digital platforms, while advantageous, necessitates careful coordination and organisation.
Conclusion
As we navigate these evolving changes, it is essential for companies and expatriates to remain informed and proactive. Regular updates and open communication with immigration authorities can help alleviate some of the challenges faced. We encourage our clients to reach out with any questions or concerns, and we are committed to providing timely updates on the shifting immigration landscape in Latin America.
